German has four grammatical cases that determine the role of nouns and pronouns in a sentence:

Case Question Typical Role Example Nominativ Wer? / Was? (Who? / What?) Subject Der Mann liest. Akkusativ Wen? / Was? (Whom? / What?) Direct Object Ich sehe den Mann. Dativ Wem? (To whom?) Indirect Object Ich gebe dem Mann ein Buch. Genitiv Wessen? (Whose?) Possession Das ist das Auto des Mannes.
