🎧 telc A2 – Hörverstehen (Listening)

The listening section in the telc A2 exam checks how well you understand spoken German in daily situations like shopping, travel, work and personal conversations.

You do NOT need to understand every word. The goal is to catch key information.

🧩 Structure of the telc A2 Listening Section

The Hörverstehen part usually has 3 tasks and takes around 20–25 minutes in total.

✅ Part 1 – Short Dialogues

You will hear short conversations (often twice).

Goal: Understand the general idea

What to listen for:

  • Where
  • Who is speaking
  • Why they are speaking

Example:

Two people talking at a train station

You answer a multiple choice question like:

Where is the woman going?

✅ Part 2 – Announcements & Messages

You will hear:

  • Announcements
  • Voicemails
  • Information messages

Goal: Understand specific details

Typical questions:

  • Time
  • Place
  • Price
  • Date
  • Appointment changes

Example:

„Der Termin wurde auf Donnerstag um 15 Uhr verschoben.“

The answer:
✅ Thursday at 3 PM

✅ Part 3 – Longer Conversation

You will hear a longer dialogue (2 people talking).

Goal: Understand opinions, plans or decisions

Focus on:

  • Who wants what
  • When something happens
  • Agreement / disagreement

This part is usually True / False or Yes / No type.

🧠 Smart Strategies That Work

These simple habits can easily increase your score:

✔ Read the questions first

Before the audio starts, quickly read:

  • What is being asked
  • What type of information you need

Your brain will be ready to catch it.

✔ Focus on Keywords, Not Every Word

Listen for numbers, days, locations and verbs like:

  • kaufen – to buy
  • fahren – to go by transport
  • treffen – to meet
  • verschieben – to reschedule
  • absagen – to cancel

You don’t need perfect grammar recognition.

✔ Ignore Unknown Words

If you don't know a word, skip it.
Focus on words you DO understand.

German speakers often repeat important ideas using simple language.

✔ Listen for Time & Number Patterns

Common A2 phrases:

  • am Montag
  • um 18 Uhr
  • in zwei Wochen
  • 25 Euro
  • nächste Woche
  • morgen / übermorgen

These always connect to answers.

⚠️ Common Traps Students Fall Into

Avoid these mistakes:

❌ Waiting to understand everything
❌ Getting stuck on one sentence
❌ Panicking if you miss something
❌ Not reading the question first

Listening is about catching meaning, not perfection.

🎯 Practice Examples (A2 level)

Try to answer mentally.

Example 1

Audio (imaginary):

„Hallo Anna, ich komme heute 10 Minuten später. Der Bus hat Verspätung.“

Question: Why is the person late?

✅ Because the bus is delayed

Example 2

Audio:

„Das Restaurant öffnet um 11 Uhr, aber die Küche beginnt erst um 12 Uhr.“

Question: When does the kitchen open?

✅ 12:00

Example 3

Audio:

„Wir treffen uns Samstag vor dem Kino.“

Question: Where are they meeting?

✅ In front of the cinema

📅 7-Day Mini Listening Plan (A2)

Day 1–2:
Listen to simple A2 conversations (1–2 mins)
Try to catch time, place, topic

Day 3–4:
Listen + write down numbers you hear

Day 5:
Try practice test (Part 1 + 2)

Day 6:
Try Part 3 (longer conversation)

Day 7:
Full mock test + review mistakes

Just 20–30 minutes a day is enough.

✅ Final Tip

If you understand 60–70%, you are doing very well for A2.

Listening is not about speed. It’s about focus and confidence. **
